My name is Dr. James Jones and I am a Licensed Clinical Psychologist. I provide both short- and long-term insight-oriented psychotherapy to adolescents, adults, and couples in Oakland County, MI. My training as a Clinical Psychologist prepared me to work effectively with a diverse range of people who are struggling with issues--ranging from grief, loss, and other adjustment problems to more intensive psychological problems such as depression, anxiety disorders, PTSD, psychosomatic illnesses, and psychosis. In addition to conducting psychotherapy for 20+ years, I have taught graduate courses and supervise psychologists and other mental health therapists.
My approach to psychotherapy is an integration of psychoanalytic, cognitive-behavioral, and interpersonal theories. This means that I try to understand a client's conscious and unconscious struggles that inform how they currently cope with feelings, relationships, and themselves. Emotional struggles are affected both by what is going on in our lives presently, and experiences and relationships during our formative years. In addition, how we think about ourselves and what we tell ourselves also affects how we feel and can perpetuate our suffering. A deep understanding of one's inner life, in all its complexity--understanding that is best arrived at in the context of a new, safe, and therapeutic relationship--frequently leads to freedom from maladaptive symptoms, freedom from destructive patterns and relationships in our lives, and greater openness and growth in the future.
